Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs » Stone Tile Cleaning

  • Q: What can I do to keep my stone tiles looking new?
  • A: To keep your stone tiles and grout looking new, Tile Cleaners Melbourne® recommend cleaning each week with a damp microfibre cloth and a mild detergent to remove any dirt or grime from the tiled surface. Any strong detergents(any strong acid or alkali) may affect the sealer. Mild detergents and pH neutral substances are strongly recommended. Our best advice to protect your stone tiles is to seal them with one of our highest quality sealers such as Australian made Deepshield® quality impregnating water based sealer. This is the best protection you stone tiles can have against staining.

Other FAQs :

  • Q: The tile supplier said to seal my porcelain but my tiler said not to - why?
  • A: The truth is porcelain has created much confusion in the market place and many pages have been written to try to put all issues into perspective. The more questions you ask the more confused you will be. As a rule of thumb, textured and honed porcelain doesn't need to be sealed, but polished porcelain often does need sealing. This is contrary to what may seem logical. The tiny pores that accept staining are created in the polishing process. A good penetrating sealer such as Deepshield Gold® fills these pores and sets up excellent stain protection. If you are not sure do a stain test, use a sample stone or an off-cut and try to stain it with the things common to that area. If it stains, there is a benefit to having the stone sealed.
    • Q: How do I maintain my floors after they have been cleaned / sealed?
    • A: The technician who carries out your cleaning/sealing will be able to offer maintenance advice specific to your tiled area. As a general rule we recommend the use of a mild cleaner at least weekly to maintain you tiled floors. Tiles with a textured surface may benefit from the use of a doodlebug rather than a mop for a more effective clean. Avoid the use of harsh chemicals which will decrease the life expectancy of sealers. Also when mopping make sure to change you water frequently otherwise all you might achieve is spreading dirty water around your floors!
